What Cornell University says:

Cornell University was founded in 1865 as a coeducational, nonsectarian institution where 'any person can find instruction in any study.' Once dubbed the first "American university," Cornell continues to push the limits of its extraordinary founding idea. Renowned for its distinctive mix of eminent scholarship, academic rigor and commitment to public service, it attracts more than 20,000 students from every state in the Union and over 120 countries. They learn from a world-class faculty teaching more than 5,000 courses and participate in cutting-edge research in 11 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools on the uniquely beautiful Ithaca campus, at Cornell's medical college campuses in New York City and Qatar, and in affiliated programs around the world. The breadth of study, ranging from legendary programs in the humanities to world-class interdisciplinary research centers in nanotechnology, biotechnology, supercomputing and genomics, sets Cornell apart from its Ivy League peers. The land-grant university of New York State, Cornell also boasts the nation's first colleges devoted to hotel administration, industrial and labor relations, and veterinary medicine. In recent years, Cornell has been aggressively expanding its international programs - from the establishment, in 2001, of the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, the first American medical school outside of the United States, to the forging of partnerships and collaborations with major institutions in China, India, and Singapore - further supporting Cornell's status as the transnational university of the future.

Admissions

American schools typically use a 4.0 grading system, this may differ considerably from what is used in your school and we strongly advise you to speak to a local counselor to better assess your chances of admission. For international students another key requirement is being able to prove your English language proficiency. All American universities accept the TOEFL exam and most now accept IELTS and PTE also. Cornell University asks for a minimum of 600 for paper-based TOEFL exams. Your counselor will be able to help you convert this to an internet-based TOEFL exam or an IELTS or PTE equivalent score. There are two standardized tests which are used to evaluate students’ preparedness for university-level studies, these are the SAT and the ACT. To be competitive, Cornell University applicants should aim for an SAT 1 Critical Reading section score range of 650 – 740 and a Math section score range of 680 – 770. With the ACT, students accepted to Cornell University generally score within a range of 30 – 34. Admissions interviews are required of some at Cornell University. The school has the following special requirements for specific courses:
  • Portfolio required for art program applicants

Tuition and Fees

Cornell University requires a non-refundable fee of $75 to submit your application. An application fee waiver may be available for students who can demonstrate a financial need. An advanced deposit is not required from international students who are offered admission. University fees can vary from time to time. We try hard to ensure that the data we present here is accurate, but you should speak to your counselor to ensure you receive up to date information.
