The University of Oxford is a research university based in the city of Oxford in the UK and is the oldest university in the English-speaking world with no formal foundation date having survived. It is also the second oldest surviving university in the world. It saw rapid expansion from the 1160s after the king Henry II banned English students from travelling to Paris to study while in 1209, disgruntled students left the university to form Cambridge.The university is a member of the League of European Research Universities and the Russell Group of research-led British universities as well as the International Alliance of Research Universities.
