San Marcos cloisters have formed many of the most remarkable figures of art, science and politics of Peru and America. It hosts the most professional and leading scholars in the country, providing services at major universities as well as domestic and foreign companies and institutions. Among them is our Nobel Prize in Literature 2010: Mario Vargas Llosa. The National University of San Marcos, Dean of America, was founded on May 12, 1551, and was pioneer of university history in the continent. The Dominicans in their convents of Cuzco (principal Peruvian city in the sixteenth century) and Lima, used to study Arts and Theology for training former members and prepare the newcomers. Campus and Accommodation

There are several options for accommodation in Lima. In all cases, you must communicate directly with the option that best fits your needs. Student House: Living in a Student House has become very popular. These homes have room for six or more students. Students share bathroom, kitchen, laundry and other common areas. Many of our exchange students have chosen this option. Host family: The University of San Marcos keeps in touch with some families offering rooms for rent to foreign students where they can have a private room and shared bathroom, kitchen and other common areas. The advantage of living in a family is that the rent usually includes utilities fees. Rent appartment: Some international students prefer to share an apartment with two, three or more people. Costs vary depending on the type of apartment (number of rooms, location, etc.). Usually, a monthly department is between US $ 350 and US $ 600 per month, depending on how many share the costs. The biggest downside to sharing an apartment is the rent does not include electricity, water and telephone. These are additional costs to be covered by the tenants. Another disadvantage is that the owners usually ask for a deposit or advance the equivalent of two or three months rent. If you are interested in an apartment, students must find it by themselves. We recommend checking the Sunday edition of the newspaper El Comercio or its digital version: http://urbania.pe/ Recommended neighbourhoods TO LIVE IN LIMA: The University of San Marcos is located in between downtown Lima and Callao. Some nearby neighborhoods are San Miguel, Pueblo Libre and Magdalena and Brena. Although further from the university, other recommended areas are Jesus Maria, Surco and Miraflores
