Founded in 1803, the Universidad de Antioquia is the oldest public university in Colombia with more than 200 years of academic records and experience in national and international cooperation. Currently home to more than 37.000 students, the University is known as the Alma Mater of the Department of Antioquia. The UdeA, as the regional leading university has presence in 12 campuses in the sub-region and the main campus is located in Medellin, its lively capital city, which is today regarded as a model of educational, cultural and urban development in the Americas. Graduate fellowship program ICETEX offers grants and fellowships to international students who wish to pursue a graduate program at the University of Antioquia. The graduate fellowship program is aimed at those students whose home countries have exchange fellowship programs with Colombian universities. This program allows international students to attend graduate school in Colombia. One third of the Universitys research groups are classified at the national level as excellence groups, and the total of 225 groups involve more than 1,500 researchers, working on 1,000 collaborative projects in all fields of knowledge. They have built the Universitys name as a key research institution in Colombia and a dynamic and trusted partner in Latin America. Campus and Accommodation

The main campus is located in Medellin, its lively capital city, which is today regarded as a model of educational, cultural and urban development in the Americas. The UdeA, as the regional leading university has presence in 12 campuses in the sub-region, covering a wide range of landscapes, from the urban Medellin to the Caribbean coast in Turbo and rural areas in the southwest of the region, where faculties teach to, train and work with a very diverse population in terms of socio-economic level and cultural diversity, including indigenous and Afro-Colombian groups, for example. Each campus benefits from the same administrative facilities as the main campus, and is used as a local project office for the research projects field work. Currently more than 6,000 students attend its regional campuses throughout the Department of Antioquia. There are a number of housing options and amenities to fit any budget and range from hostels and hotels to bedrooms and apartments.

Teaching Quality

Research internship programs provide international faculty and students with the opportunity to participate in research activities at the University of Antioquia. Candidates must select and be accepted by a faculty advisor. Spanish for Foreign Students program at the School of Languages offers courses to international students in Spanish as a second language. The program is designed to provide non-native speakers of Spanish with the skills and knowledge they need to communicate effectively in academic settings. The program is divided into several modules, each aimed at helping students achieve and develop their learning goals. Learning takes place both in the classroom and in outdoor settings in order to provide students a meaningful opportunity of being fully immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment and improve their ability to use language in real-life situations as they are in direct contact with native speakers of Spanish. The course consists of the following modules: Spanish for beginners Spanish level 1 Spanish level 2 Spanish level 3 Intermediate Spanish 1 Intermediate Spanish 2 Intermediate Spanish 3 Intermediate Spanish 4 Spanish speaking skills Integrated skills in Spanish Writing skills Spanish language and culture Each module takes 40 hours to complete and is delivered through on-site sessions. Participants are required to attend at least 4 hours of coursework per week. Delivery of modules 9 through 16 may vary based on the student’s specific request. International Student Life

Medellin is the capital of Antioquia department in Colombia and the countrys second largest city with a population of approximately 2.5 million people. It is also a major manufacturing, industrial and cultural area. With an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius (74XF), Medellins year-round temperate weather contributed to its nickname "the City of Eternal Spring". It is located in a lush valley nestled in the central Andes mountains. The city has recently hosted a variety of high-profile international events such as the 50th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank, the 9th South American Games, the 38th OAS General Assembly, and the Seventh Session of the World Urban Forum. Besides being a major commercial and industrial center, the city is famous for its vivid cultural scene and nightlife, as well as its friendly, helpful people. In 2013, Medellin was selected as the winner of The Wall Street Journal and Cities Innovative City of the Year competition, a global advertising program developed in partnership with The Urban Land Institute to recognize the most innovative urban centers. The city has been also recognized by Tripadvisor, the worlds largest travel site, as one outstanding destination in South America. Medellin now has the best-integrated public transportation system in South America, with a number of transport options connected to a fast, clean and efficient metro network. Take a look at these transportation options. Metro: Medellin metro system comprises two main lines, Line A, which runs north-south through the city; and Line B, running east-west through downtown. Cable car system (Metrocable): Towering over the city skyline, this cable car system is composed of three lines (J, K, and L) and connects the hillside neighborhoods with the main metro network. It is also one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Metroplus: This system also known as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) consists of gas-powered articulated buses also connected to Metro and Metrocable systems. This system comprises two lines, each with at least one stop connected to a line of the Metro, where you can transfer to Metro or Metrocable lines. Metroplus buses circulate throughout the city and primarily serve the neighborhoods of Aranjuez, Manrique and Belen.The Metroplus station closest to University of Antioquia is Ruta N station. SIT: This system consists of buses providing transportation services to and from the various metro stations. Bike sharing system (ENCICLA): It consists of a network of shared bicycles available for short-term use for free. This bike sharing system is a convenient, comfortable and flexible way to cycle in Medellin. Bikes are available at secure, easy-to-use, automated docking stations spread around the city, and two stations are conveniently located near the UA campus. Learn more. Safety Medellin has made massive progress in both public safety and tourism over the past decades. However, as the city slowly becomes a recognizable tourist destination, there still some places a local or a traveler should avoid for their own safety as in every big city of the world.
