Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is a private higher education institution founded in 1623. It is one of the oldest private university, and most traditional Colombian universities, directed by the Society of Jesus, with its main facilities in Bogot and a sectional division in Cali. It is part of the 31 universities entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America, and one of the 114 in the entire world. Due to the high quality of its academic offer, Javeriana University was the first higher education institution in the country to be awarded Institutional Accreditation by the Colombian Ministry of Education. The University in Bogota has 19.000 undergraduate students and 4.300 graduate students, 4.000 Faculty staff and 1.500 administrative employees. It has 18 Schools comprising 191 academic programs catering to different areas of knowledge, giving the university its multidisciplinary nature. It offers 38 undergraduate programs, 73 professional specializations, 39 medical and surgical specializations, 33 masters and 8 PhD's. Javeriana University is a researched based University. It is ranked number one among private universities in Colombia for having the largest number of refereed journals, and number fifth for having the most research groups recognized by the National Agency of Science and Technology for their quality and productivity. Campus and Accommodation

In its 16 hectares and nearly 90,000 square meters of construction arise 26 academic buildings, library, radio station, television studio, 3 hospitals, banks, 10 cafeterias, 3 auditoriums, indoor arena, football field, 900 parking spaces, 17,000 square meters of pedestrian plazas, 74,000 square meters of gardens. The Sport Center offers over 30 different sports, and includes the first synthetic soccer field with official measures on a University campus in Colombia. Finally, Javeriana University offers through Centro Atico next generation resources, enhancing the learning experience. Centro Atico is the first communication and information technological resource center in Latin America for the development of education, sound, image and design.

Teaching Quality

The main research areas of Javeriana University are: Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Health Sciences and Engineering. The University runs an average of 120 research projects per year. It has 123 research groups highly ranked before the National Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (COLCIENCIAS) for their quality and productivity. Besides that, Javeriana University participates in 3 National Excellence Research Centers: CIEBREG (Biodiversity and Genetics); CEIBA (Interdisciplinary Research on Complex Systems) and GEBIX (Genomics and Bioinformatics). Javeriana's students have the opportunity to participate in internship programs and in social projects, in Bogota or nationwide, where they can apply the acquired knowledge in their field of study. The Capital City of Colombia is Bogota, located near the geographical center of Colombia, on a high plateau in the Andes Mountains. It is the third highest mayor city in the world, with an altitude of 2,640 meters (8661 ft) above sea level. It has a population of 7.881.156 (2005 census). The average temperature in Bogota is 14XC, varying from 3XC to 25XC. Dry and rainy seasons alternate throughout the year; hailstorms are common during the rainy season.
