Campus and Accommodation

PUC-RIO is located in Gavea, a charming neighborhood near the forest and beaches of the Zona Sul area of Rio de Janeiro. Its campus is beautifully situated within a tropical forest, surrounded by lush trees and with a small stream running through it. Visitors and students can often see small monkeys and squirrels jumping among the trees. PUC- Rio combines like this infrastructure and natural beauty. Has also large libraries with access to over 500,000 titles; There are four libraries on campus including the CENTRAL LIBRARY and a specialized library per academic center. FREE Internet access provided (broadband and wireless); Through some of its specialized centers, PUC-RIO also provides social assistance to its staff and the outside community. The Center for Assistance to Homeless Children (NEAM), the Training Office for Law Students (EMA), the Applied Psychology Service (SPA) and the First Aid Center also serve an important function on campus. Cultural center with art exhibitions throughout the year; The PILOTIS, is an open meeting area for concerts, political debates and fairs; A large number of city bus lines makes it easy to get to campus. PUC-RIO - Rio DataCentro RIO DATACENTRO (RDC) is the computer center. The first internet provider in the country, the RDC has a state- of -the-art multiprocessor computer and a graphics-computing center, among other equipment and programs. All PUC-RIO students, including international students, benefit from free access to the Internet from numerous terminals located in various microcomputer laboratories on campus. SOLAR GRANDJEAN DE MONTIGNY, PUC-RIO's Cultural Center, displays numerous visual arts exhibitions year-round. PUC-RIO - Pilotis In the PILOTIS, the ground floor of the Kennedy Building, many cultural events take place throughout the year, including political debates and fairs. The "Festa Junina," a traditional folkloric festival occurring each June, showcases typical food and traditional dances which bring to life an old-fashioned way of living in Brazil. The "Mostra PUC- Rio" is an internship Fair held every August that brings industrial and commercial organizations into close contact with the students at the university. The PUC-RIO campus also offers restaurants and service centers, including: Three restaurants with complete meals ranging between US$4,00 to US$10,00 coffee-shops, 1 pizza-parlor; a bookstore and an office supply store; three copy centers; three bank branches; a post office; a newsstand and several ATM machines. Close to the campus, students also have easy access to a great number of shops, banks, specialized bookstores, restaurants, a movie and a shopping mall. The beautiful Botanical Garden and Leblon beach are also only within walking distance from campus. PUC-Rio does not provide dorms facilities on campus but offers an enriched opportunity for students to experience the Brazilian way of life by placing students in a home-stay program. International students are placed in home-stays located in the south zone of the city, the same as the university. Most families live near the university, within 20-30 minutes from campus by city bus. The host families are recommended by PUC- RIO International Cooperation Central Coordination Office and represent a wide range of incomes and situations, from a grandmother living alone to a couple living in the city to a family with several young children. Each house has their specific rules in terms of hygiene, safety, cooking and bringing friends over etc. PUC-Rio serves as a liaison to facilitate the introduction between exchange students and host families interested in receiving them.

International Student Life

PUC-RIO has 3 sports areas where many sports are played, such as football (soccer), volleyball and capoeira. In addition, both international students and the regular students are allowed to swim at one of the most famous clubs in town: the Flamengo Football (soccer) Club. It is located within walking distance of campus. Parties and gatherings are organized specifically for international students in order to help them integrate into the university community. Exchange students can also participate in other activities including the choir and other Brazilian cultural festivals. The Department of Social Work runs a considerable number of community projects in which PUC-RIO international students are invited to participate. With the objective of providing our International students with a variety of enriching activities during their stay in Rio de Janeiro, a number of special services are offered including the following activities, among others: Welcome at the airport and airport pick-up (on specified dates) Orientation week Online Portuguese placement test Assistance with the Federal Police registration (Immigration) Welcome lunch Tourist/cultural activities City tour of Rio de Janeiro Field trip, Welcome reception Farewell cocktail with live Brazilian music Assistance throughout the academic term - personal & academic.
